As part of the Job Search & Support Services Team this specialized position will guide and support persons with significant barriers to recognize their capabilities and assist them in developing realistic goals to obtain training and/or employment. This position will be responsible for providing employment counselling and support services to individuals targeted for involvement through the Skills Training for Employment Programs. The Employment & Training Consultant works independently to support participants toward self-sufficiency as well as participates as a team player in overall service delivery and planning.

KEY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

·        Developing respectful, collaborative relationships with individuals; conducting needs assessments to understand the individual’s context and identify issues that are preventing them from achieving their goals; developing personalized plans that will lead to an achievable employment or educational outcome.

  • Develop individualized skills training plans collaboratively with participants and support them in their implementation.
  • Assess participant need for short term orientation and certificate training.
  • Refer participants to external agencies as needed and track these connections as appropriate.
  • Assist participant with job search & support services as required i.e., resume & cover letter prep, interview prep.
  • Manage participant information in accordance with established standards.
  • Adhere to security procedures to ensure the safety of participants and staff.
  • Work collaboratively with the employer community to identify and secure suitable employment opportunities.
  • Negotiate and develop subsidized and unpaid work experience placements when required.
  • Assist employers and workers with workplace accommodation, job maintenance and retention support.
  • Provide on-the-job coaching when appropriate.
  • Conduct and document participant follow-up in  accordance with program policy.

Qualifications and Experience

 

Certified career development practitioner designation, post-secondary degree or diploma in child and youth care, or social work and/or have an equivalent combination of education and work experience delivering direct participant-focused support services, including experience working with people with disabilities and barriers to employment.

Require:

·        Valid BC driver’s license and access to a reliable vehicle.

·        Must be able to work flexible hours if required.

·        Previous employment counselling experience a definite asset.

·        Knowledge of local labour market.

·        Strong administrative and report writing skills.

·        Continuous learner

·        Good verbal and written communication skills

·        Ability to prioritize and work within a multi-task environment in a calm and confident manner.

  • Must have the ability to make connections with people  and meet the service needs of participants as well as form positive  working relationships with co-workers, employers, community groups and     training providers.

·        Conscientious about participant confidentiality

·        Comfortable making cold calls to employers.
