The City of Dawson Creek invites applications for the position of Equipment Operator to join the dynamic and high capacity team in the Public Works Department. There are currently two vacancies available to be filled by qualified and successful applicants, with start dates preferred to be as soon as possible. Under the general supervision of the Utilities Manager, Transportation Manager or designate, an Equipment Operator performs many tasks to assist the Public Works Department in carrying out the programs necessary to support the ongoing maintenance and operations of the City’s water, sewer, roads, drainage, cemeteries and other infrastructure assets. An Equipment Operator will operate machinery and equipment including single-axle dump trucks, as well as assisting or performing the duties of laborer's as required.                              

After a brief training period, work will be available on an “as needed” basis. Under the current Collective Agreement, casual employees are expected, as a condition of continued employment, to work at least two (2) shifts per month, if and when such shifts are offered by the Employer. Shifts may range from one shift to full-time hours (40 hours per week), so flexibility is required.

The successful candidate must have:

  • Completed Grade 12, or have an equivalent combination of education and experience;
  • A valid Class 3 Driver’s License with air brake endorsement;
  • A clean driver’s abstract;
  • An understanding of basic electrical and mechanical processes and the ability to recognize problems related to the operation of the equipment;
  • The physical agility and ability to complete duties requiring physical effort and to perform all duties in a safe manner while following established procedures;
  • The ability to maintain harmonious relationships with all members of the public and other staff members; and,
  • At least 5 years of experience operating heavy equipment such as graders, loaders, sweepers and sidewalk plows.
